Over the course of the last ten years we have seen a vast array of animals that have been brought in to see us. We have seen all sorts of wild animals and a huge array of pets so we thought that it would a good idea to take the time to show you some of the many and interesting animals that have given us so many interesting and enjoyable challenges since we opened a long ten years ago.
First let’s start with the cute and adorable, everyone loves puppies and kittens. We have seen hundreds of puppies and kittens and have been privileged to help some of them into this world. One thing they all have in common is that they all grow up too fast and cause all kinds of mischief. We always enjoy seeing young animals so we can help them get the best start possible in life. (Not just for the Cuddles. Honest 🙂
Its not just the young we see, in fact most of our patients are older animals who have had time to develop the personality quirks that make them so unique. They might be slower and bit less energetic but they are just as loved and even more loving.
We see lots of interesting exotic animals from reptiles to amphibians as well as insects. They are perhaps some of the strangest creatures you might see and they require lots of specialized care that varies greatly from animal to animal. They all have greatly varied needs that shapes how they behave and react to people. So while it may be difficult to handle some of them but they can be extremely rewarding pets when cared for properly.
However its not just the reptiles and amphibians that can be described as unusual some of the mammals that we see are quite unusual as well. We have treated monkeys, meerkats, mice, sugar gliders, squirrels and skunks to name just a few. They can be friendly or nervous but they are all interesting to work with.
Also over the last few years we have seen quite a horses and donkeys from tiny Shetlands up to big shire horses. We have even had horses so small we could bring them into the surgery for the vet to take a look at. It Gave Rob quite the surprise when a horse walked into his consult room in the middle of his afternoon consults.
The Number of birds we have been seeing has also been on the rise in the last few years, once it was unusual to see budgies but now we see budgies, parrots, raptors and the most popular of recent years Chickens. The number of chickens has sky rocketed it went from seeing none to seeing dozens in a few months. We also see quite a few racing pigeons that go astray from their flight plan, we even had a pigeon that liked us so much he came back to us repeatedly despite being sent back to his owner in Ireland repeatedly.
We also do our best to help treat any wildlife that is brought to us that is injured or in distress. So quite often we see some of Britain’s more unusual wildlife. We have seen every thing from herons to sparrowhawks and hedgehogs to foxes. This normally includes quite a few young animals that have recently fledged or are still supposed to be with their parents. Where we try our best to get them back to their parents of if that isn’t possible we try to get them released back into the area where they came from.
